A tailor-made career
There are 50 years worth of patterns stored at the Ashley Fogel offices in Wellington's Miramar and Stuart Wadham has had a hand in creating more than half of them.
After three decades at the Wellington fashion label, Wadham is still in his happy place in the design room, figuring out the mechanics of a jacket or coat to create the perfect fit.
"I like the engineering," he says. "Working out how to make the designer's idea happen. How to engineer the garment's cut in the right place and fold in the right place to make it work. It's also got to work on the machine."
Wadham shrugs off the title of head pattern maker, but he has played a key part in Ashley Fogel's reputation for fine suiting.
"He's brilliant and precise," fellow pattern maker Birthe Rugaard-Street says. "He's very fussy, but that is a good thing. With jackets it's really important."
A good jacket, according to Wadham, must hang nicely, there should be no drag or pull in the fabric. It's got to be comfortable. Big enough to move in, but not too big. And it's got to last.
