How necessary is it to have a shopping cart cover for infants?

If you don't have one, what do you do about them wanting to try to eat/suck on the cart?
thats funny i was just thinking about this this morning and if it is really necessary.
i guess it is, think about all the nasty things that touch the shopping cart and people who use them and don't wash their hands. they are never cleaned
